How to make a Salad

If you are intimidated by the prospect of incorporating more salads into your diet this "recipe" is for you. Salads should not be boring. Salads should not be something you have to force yourself to eat. Salads should be filling and fun to make. They can even be beautiful. You should not be forcing yourself to eat Kale or Tomatoes if you hate them. A salad by definition is simply a dish that contains virtually any type of ready-to-eat food.

There is a simple equation to creating a salad you will enjoy.

Base + Fat + Sweet + Herb + Cruciferous + Accents + Allium + Dressing

= Enjoyable Salad

The combinations are endless. See below for examples for each ingredient category

  • Base

    Romaine Lettuce, Kale, Pasta, Quinoa, Beans, Sprouts, Arugula, Spinach, Butterhead Lettuce, Leaf Lettuce, Rediccio, Treviso, Meselun

  • Fat

    Avocado, Tofu, Tahini, Hemp Hearts, Raw Nuts, Coconut, Olives or Raw Seeds

  • Sweet

    Berries, Apples, Grapes, Peaches, Dried Fruit, Dragon Fruit, Kiwi, Oranges, Cranberries

  • Herbs

    Basil, Cilantro, Dill, Mint, Parsley , Tarragon, Rosemary, Sage, Oregano

  • Cruciferous

    Cabbage, Brocolli, Roasted Brussles Sprouts, Cauliflower, Kale

  • Accents

    Cucumber, Peas, Tomato, Jalapeano, Mushrooms, Sweet Pepper, Roasted Beets, Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Beans, Carrots

  • Allium

    Sweet Onion, Crushed Garlic, Scallions, Red Onion, Shallots, Chives, Green Onion

  • Dressing
